Band succeed at Bugle

Not even the blustery wet early morning start could deter the determination of the band, as they headed off to Bugle, near St Austell, for the annual West of England Bandsman’s Festival, which has been running since 1912.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the festival, bands from across the West Country march through the village to the contest ground where they compete for various prizes, including one for Deportment.

The day closes with the winning band performing in the village square.

Okehampton Band finished in second place this year at Bugle, their highest placing to date, and were also awarded second place in the Deportment category.

BIG BIG THANKS…….to Des Law on leading the Band over the last 10 years. Des confirmed at the Annual General Meeting held on the 12th March that he was standing down from the demanding role as the Band’s Musical Director. The Band is pleased that Des will continue to play an active part in the Band, as music librarian and playing in the Bass section of the Band. Des, supported by his wife Jean, has played an important role in ensuring that Okehampton continues to have a Town Band, that can support local community events including the Okehampton Carnival, The Mayor’s Parade and Remembrance Sunday, as well as competing in Brass Band contests. We all therefore wish to thank Des and Jean for all their enthusiasm and commitment shown to the band over the past 10 years.

We are pleased to confirm that it was agreed at the Annual General Meeting that Richard Beardon will take over the role of Musical Director for the Band, and we wish Richard and the Band continued success in the future.

Help for Heroes……it was also agreed at the Annual General Meeting that the Band’s chosen charity for the Spring Concert is the charity Help for Heroes, which is a very worthwhile cause.
